You may find yourself “stuck” in a place you hadn’t intended to sketch, and find the most interesting subjects! Medium really doesn’t matter that much. There is no right or wrong, and there is no magical tool. We’ll look at a number of favorites: graphite, ink, colored pencil, watercolor and gouache, and we’ll explore their uses and capabilities, their pros and their cons.

Do the same thing with children. Kids have a completely different outlook, unjaded and fresh. They may also see things from a lower vantage point that you may have overlooked. Preserving Things Before They’re Gone Have you ever realized how many places and things may be endangered by age, vandalism or even progress? I have sketches of all kinds of things that aren’t there any more, and I’m glad I took time to sketch them. I also, all too often, drive by a place I’ve meant to sketch a dozen times and find it’s being demolished, has burned down or has been so badly “remuddled” that it has no character left.

The bold lines seemed to capture my anxiety about the project. Hanging Garden Sketch I did this small postcard-size sketch with a brown ink pen and quick watercolor washes.
