During the struggles between the Yorkists and the Lancastrians Fortescue seems to have joined the Lancastrian forces in February 1461, just before Edward IV was proclaimed king. Thereafter he stayed with them and went into exile with Queen Margaret, Henry VI’s widow, and their son the young Prince Edward, first in Scotland and then in France. He returned to England in 1471, but after the battle of Tewkesbury he was taken prisoner and gave himself over to the cause of Edward IV, with the result that he was pardoned in October 1471.
